🧼 Gym Hygiene 101: Stay Clean, Stay Healthy on the Mats

2–3 minutes

read

Training Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, or MMA is one of the best things you can do for your body and mind—but it also means close contact, shared mats, and lots of sweat. That’s why gym hygiene isn’t just about courtesy—it’s about keeping yourself and your teammates safe.

Here’s what Coach Dan wants every athlete at Frequency MMA to know:

🚪 Leave Your Day at the Door—Including Your Dirt

When you step onto the mats, you’re sharing a training space with your partners. Always remove your shoes before stepping on the mats and shower before class (especially if you’ve been working, outdoors, or sweating already) to show respect for your training partners.

🧽 Post-Roll Showers Are Non-Negotiable

After class, showering immediately is one of the best ways to prevent common skin infections like:

  • Ringworm
  • Staph
  • Impetigo
  • MRSA

These can spread fast in grappling gyms. Even if you don’t feel dirty, microscopic bacteria and fungi love warm, sweaty skin.

🚿 Don’t wait until you get home. Shower at the gym or as soon as you walk through the door.

💡 Coach Dan’s Recommended Body Washes

Using a body wash designed for athletes can help fight off common gym germs while being gentle on skin.

👉 CLn® SportWash – High-Performance Sport Body Wash

Dermatologist-recommended for athletes. This high-performance formula helps remove sweat, dirt, and microbes without harsh chemicals. Great for sensitive or breakout-prone skin.

👉 Defense Soap Organic Tea Tree Body Wash

A favorite in the BJJ and wrestling community. Made with natural tea tree and eucalyptus oils, it gently fights bacteria and fungus while leaving your skin feeling fresh.

✂️ Trim Fingernails, Remove Jewelry

  • Fingernails and toenails should always be trimmed short. Long nails can accidentally scratch, tear skin, or cause eye injuries during rolls.
  • Jewelry, including rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, must be removed before training. Even small items can cause cuts or get caught during grappling.

🧴 Other Good Hygiene Habits

  • Wear clean training clothes (rash guards, gis, shorts) every session
  • Wash gear immediately after use
  • Use flip-flops in the locker room or shower
  • Wipe down your gym bag and water bottle weekly

🥋 Train Hard. Train Clean.

Good hygiene is part of being a good training partner. When everyone takes responsibility, we all stay healthier and miss fewer training days.

Respect the mats. Respect your teammates. Stay sharp—and stay clean.
